Friday Focus #73: Chiropractic Office Halloween Prep (Ratty-Tatty or Ready?)

Friday Focus #73 · One quick win your chiropractic team can run today

The chiropractic offices that have the most fun in October aren't the ones with the biggest budget. They're the ones who prepped in September.

Ten minutes. One bin. That's where it starts.

If you want your chiropractic office ready for Halloween and October marketing without the last minute scramble (or the rush shipping fees), do a 10 minute check today: pull out last year's decorations, sort them into "keep" and "ratty-tatty," make your reorder list, and put ONE done-by date on the calendar. Then, before October 1st, pick your team costume theme and open your October marketing plan. Prep ahead, stay ahead.

If you're a D.C. reading this, stay with me... there's a part below that's just for you. And if you're a C.A. reading this, you're the one who's going to make the first part happen by 5pm. 🎯

Why most chiropractic teams walk into October already behind

Picture it. It's October 3rd. Someone finally drags the Halloween bin out of the back closet.

The pumpkin garland is missing half its pumpkins. The "Spooktacular Savings" sign has a coffee ring on it. The fake cobwebs are... well, you know what the fake cobwebs look like after a year in a bin.

And now it's a mad dash. Rush orders. Costumes in the wrong size. A flyer that goes out a week late because nobody decided what it should say.

Truth over comfort... the teams scrambling in October aren't behind because they're bad at this. They waited for October to start thinking about October.

And they're not alone in that. According to the National Retail Federation's 2026 Halloween survey (published September 22, 2026), about half of consumers (49%) plan to start their Halloween shopping in September or earlier. Americans are expected to spend $4.3 billion on decorations and $4.4 billion on costumes this year. Translation? The good stuff goes fast, and your patients are already in the Halloween aisle. Your office should be too.

So pause here for a second. When did your team START planning last October? Was it September... or the week of?

Today's focus: the 10 minute check (do this TODAY)

This part is not a project. No strategy session required. Just ten minutes and a bin.

  1. Pull out last year's Halloween decorations. Sort into two piles... keep, and ratty-tatty (bye).
  2. Make your reorder list right now, even if you don't hit "buy" yet. The longer you wait, the more it costs you.
  3. Put ONE date on the calendar: the day everything needs to be ordered and done by.

Then, before October 1st (this is exactly what that done-by date is for):

  1. Pick your team costume theme. Bring it to Monday's huddle and let the team vote. Costumes sell out fast, and the wrong size means ordering twice.
  2. Pull up your October marketing plan (or start one). Flyers, socials, in-office promos... whatever you run.

Ten minutes today. Two conversations this week. Your October is half built before it even starts. Does that make sense?

Your October marketing plan is bigger than Halloween

Okay, quick tangent... actually no, it's not a tangent, it's the whole point.

October isn't just Halloween for a chiropractic office. It's also National Chiropractic Health Month, and the American Chiropractic Association's 2026 theme is "Joint Efforts," all about joint health, mobility, and moving well for a lifetime.

Think about that. You've got a whole month where chiropractic is already in the conversation... PLUS a holiday that has your patients walking through your door in a playful mood, bringing their kids, and asking "what's with the skeleton?"

That skeleton at your front desk isn't just a decoration. It's a conversation starter about spines. That candy bowl isn't just a candy bowl. It's a reason for a patient to linger for thirty extra seconds, which is thirty seconds your C.A. gets to plant a seed.

When you wait until October 1st, though... you're too busy finding the tape to notice any of that. When you prep ahead, you stay ahead. The decorations get done in September so the CONVERSATIONS can happen in October.

So when your team pulls up that October plan this week, ask one question: what are we going to SAY this month, not just hang?

For my D.C.s reading this

With love, Doc... this one looks small. It's not.

Two of you are reading this right now, and I want to talk to both.

If you're the D.C. who feels like October always sneaks up on you... like every seasonal promo gets thrown together at the last second and costs more than it should... this is not a budget problem. It's a timing problem. And timing is the one you get to fix for free, today.

And if you're the D.C. who's already crushing it... who listens to the business podcasts on the drive in and runs a tight ship... this one still trips you up, because decorations feel too small for your attention. You're right. They ARE too small for your attention. That's exactly why it belongs on your team's plate, with a date attached.

So here's the task you hand your C.A. today:

"Before you clock out, pull the Halloween bin, make the keep and toss piles, and send me the reorder list plus one done-by date. Let's lock the team costume theme at Monday's huddle."

Then at Monday's huddle, ask out loud: "Who's got our October done-by date?" Not who's thinking about it. Who has the date.

One frame I want to gently name, because I love you enough to... handing this to your team is delegating. Handing it over and never asking about it again is abdicating. You already know the difference. Trust your team with the doing. Keep the date and the question for yourself. That's leadership that doesn't cost you a single Saturday.

For my C.A.s reading this 🤗

This is your permission slip to LEAD, not just work.

You don't need to wait for your doctor to bring up Halloween. You're allowed to walk in on Monday and say "I already pulled the bin, here's what we need, here's our done-by date." Do you feel the difference in that? That's not a C.A. waiting to be told. That's a C.A. running the office like it's their own.

And the costume theme? Have FUN with it. Get the whole team in on the vote. Patients remember the office where everyone dressed as a crayon box way longer than they remember a flyer.

You are not now, nor will you ever be, "just the front desk." You're the reason October feels like a celebration instead of a scramble.

Proof this is available to YOUR office too

Here's a real one. Melissa is a financial C.A. at Gucciardo Specific Chiropractic in New York, and a Chiropractic Assistant for 9 years. She shared this with me about the ideas that move through our coaching:

"It's so great to see how other offices market ideas and how we can use those ideas or expand on them to help serve our patients and their families as well... As a side note, I love the fall and saw a post on Miranda's Chiropractic Assistant page giving leaves out to patients, and that was such a brilliant idea... hand out leaves to patients to write what they're thankful for, or a name of who they're thankful for."

Do you see what she did there? She saw a seasonal idea, and she grabbed it early enough to actually USE it. That's the whole game. A great seasonal idea you find on October 28th is a great idea for next year.

And the leaves? One small, fun move that gets patients writing down the NAMES of the people they love. (That's exactly who a referral conversation is for.)

That's what September prep buys you. Not just cuter decorations. Room to run the ideas that actually connect.

Scrambling teams vs. connected teams

Let's not sugarcoat it. Every seasonal thing you put off costs you twice... once in rush shipping, and once in the energy your team burns chasing it.

❌ Scrambling teams wait for October to remind them.
✅ Connected chiropractic teams prep in September... and walk into the month already ready.

So which one are you right now? Are you the office pulling the bin out on October 3rd... or the one that already knows what's in it?

Frequently asked questions

When should a chiropractic office start preparing for Halloween?
September. The National Retail Federation reports about half of consumers plan to start their Halloween shopping in September or earlier, so costumes and decorations sell out fast. Start with a 10 minute check in late September (sort last year's decorations, make a reorder list, set one done-by date), then pick your costume theme and finalize your October plan before the month starts.

What are easy Halloween ideas for a chiropractic office?
Keep it simple and connected. A team costume theme patients can vote on, a front desk skeleton that starts spine conversations, a candy bowl that gives patients a reason to linger, and a family friendly event or promo. The best ideas are the ones your team decides on early enough to actually run well.

What should a chiropractic October marketing plan include?
Your flyers, social posts, in-office promos, and any events, plus National Chiropractic Health Month (the ACA's 2026 theme is "Joint Efforts"). Most importantly, decide what your team will SAY to patients this month, not just what you'll hang on the walls.

Who should own October prep in a chiropractic office, the D.C. or the C.A.?
The C.A. owns the doing. The D.C. owns the done-by date and the follow up question at the huddle. That's delegating, not abdicating, and it keeps the doctor's attention on patients instead of pumpkins.

Your one move before you close the tab

You don't need a strategy session. You need ten minutes, a bin, and one date on the calendar.

Pull the bin today. That's today's assignment. The rest has a date now.

Ready teams don't find more time in October. They just start in September.
