Friday Focus #64: How to Get Your Chiropractic Team to Think Like Owners

How to Get Your Chiropractic Team to Think Like Owners (Starting at Lunch Today)
Welcome to Friday Focus → a weekly series I started on Instagram in 2023. Every Friday I drop ONE clear focus for chiropractic teams (TGIF... Today's Goal Is Focused). This is part 64, now on the blog. First one? → let's grow. ๐ฑ
If you are a D.C. reading this → this is the one to forward to your team. It costs nothing, takes one lunch break, and it starts building an ownership mindset without another meeting.
If you are a C.A. reading this → get ready to see the world a little differently today. ๐ฏ
The fastest way to get your chiropractic team to think like owners is to teach them to STUDY every business they already walk into. At lunch today, your C.A. visits a restaurant, a coffee shop, a salon, a hotel... and instead of just getting what they came for, they read the place. They find ONE thing they would bring into your office and ONE thing they would never allow in yours, then bring both to Monday's huddle. Ownership is not a personality trait you hire for. It is a lens you teach. And your patient experience quietly levels up the moment your team starts moving through the world like they own the place.
Your Patient Experience Does Not Level Up in a Meeting
Let me get unfiltered for a moment.
Most offices try to improve the patient experience by talking about it in a meeting. A quick "let's be more welcoming" and everyone nods and goes back to exactly what they were doing.
That is not how it changes.
Your patient experience levels up when your team starts NOTICING. When they start collecting ideas out in the real world and dragging the best ones back into your four walls.
The sharpest teams I know do not take lunch off from growing. They use it to gather intel. ๐ต๐ผโ๏ธ
Most People Walk In. Owners Walk In and STUDY.
Think about the last time you walked into a business that just FELT good. The eye contact. The energy. The exact words the staff chose. You felt taken care of before anyone did a single thing for you.
Now think about the last place that felt cold. Nobody looked up. You stood there wondering if you were invisible.
Both of those are lessons. Free ones. And your team walks past a dozen of them every single week without picking a single one up.
Most people walk in, get what they came for, and walk out. Owners walk in and READ the room. That one shift in attention is the whole difference between a team that shows up and a team that runs the place like their name is on the door.
Today's Focus: Gather Intel on Your Lunch Break
Here is your Friday Focus. You do it while you were going to eat anyway. Zero extra time.
๐ฏ 1. Pick ONE business you visit today. A restaurant, a coffee shop, a salon, a hotel, that med spa you have been eyeing. Any of them.
๐ฏ 2. Notice EVERYTHING the second you walk in. How were you greeted? How long until someone saw you? What did the space feel like? What words did they use?
๐ฏ 3. Find ONE thing you would bring into your office. A greeting, a small touch, a way they made you feel seen.
๐ฏ 4. Find ONE thing you would NEVER allow in yours. The thing that made you feel like a number. Name it so you can protect your patients from it.
๐ฏ 5. Drop both in your notes app and bring them to Monday's huddle. One good idea per person per week adds up faster than any training binder ever will.
Do not just experience a place. READ it.
A Reflection Question Before You Keep Scrolling
Pause here for a second.
If a brand new patient walked into YOUR office today and studied it the way you are about to study that restaurant at lunch...
What would they feel in the first ten seconds?
Seen? Or processed? Be honest. That answer is your real starting line.
For My D.C.s Reading This
Doc, here is the best part → you do not have to do this one yourself.
You hand it to your team and watch them start seeing the world like owners. That is a culture you are building, not a task you are assigning.
And when a team thinks like owners, they run the office like owners. I have watched C.A.s pull off their office's best month ever while the doctor was on vacation, running the whole show on the systems and the ownership mindset we built together. That does not happen because someone was told what to do. It happens because they learned to think for the practice, not just work in it.
Lead like you love them → give them permission to lead, and they will surprise you every time.
For My C.A.s Reading This
If you are a C.A. reading this → you are not now, nor will you ever be, just the front desk.
You are the first thing a patient feels and the reason they come back. So move through the world like it. Study the places you love. Steal the moments that made you feel cared for. Bring them home to your patients.
You do not need a title change to start leading. You just need to start seeing. More is already yours.
Busy Team vs Owner-Minded Team
โ Average teams come back from lunch talking about what they binged last night.
โ Owner-minded teams come back with ONE new move they are already testing, and the patient experience quietly levels up while everyone else stays exactly the same.
If you want more on building a team that leads instead of just clocks in, read the difference between training and coaching in chiropractic offices and why training alone is not enough for practice growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get my chiropractic team to think like owners?
Teach them to study the businesses they already visit. On their lunch break, have each team member notice how they are treated, pick one idea to bring into your office and one thing they would never allow, and share both at the next huddle. Ownership is a lens you teach through repetition, not a trait you only hire for.
How can a chiropractic office improve the patient experience for free?
Have your team collect real-world examples. Every restaurant, salon, and hotel they visit is a free lesson in what makes people feel seen or ignored. Bringing one good idea back each week improves the front desk experience without spending a dollar.
What is an ownership mindset in a chiropractic practice?
It is when your team makes decisions for the good of the whole practice, not just their own task list. They notice what patients feel, protect the experience, and improve it on their own initiative, the way they would if their name were on the door.
Why does the front desk matter so much to the patient experience?
Because the front desk is the first and last thing a patient feels every visit. By the time a patient reaches the adjusting room, they have already decided how the visit feels based on how the team greeted and cared for them. The experience is set at the front desk.
The Big Takeaway
You do not build an owner-minded team in a meeting. You build it one lunch break, one noticed detail, one huddle idea at a time.
Your whole office levels up the moment your team starts moving through the world like they own the place.
So put your spy glasses on at lunch. ๐
Success loves action. And success loves YOU.
Let's grow. ๐ฑ
