Friday Focus #76: Halloween Ideas for Chiropractic Offices (The 10 Second Question)
Oct 30, 2026
Friday Focus #76 · One quick win your chiropractic team can do today
What's a fun Halloween idea for a chiropractic office? Ask every patient ONE silly 10 second question when they walk in (like "Candy corn... yes or no?"), then play along with whatever they say. No costume required.
Fun isn't a costume. Fun is a choice.
Some offices are in full costume today. Some don't decorate a single thing. Maybe Halloween isn't a big deal in your town, or with your patients. Same focus either way. Today's focus takes about 10 seconds per patient, and it turns a regular check in into a moment your patients actually remember.
If you're a D.C. reading this, there's a part below just for you. And if you're a C.A. reading this, you get to start this with your very next patient. š
Why waiting for a holiday to be fun is a missed chance
Let's be honest. A lot of teams save the fun for the calendar. Halloween, Christmas, the office party. The rest of the year? Head down, get through the schedule, keep it professional.
And I get it. A packed Friday doesn't feel like a fun day. It feels like a day to survive.
But here's what I want you to sit with. Patients can feel the difference between a front desk that is running through a list and a front desk that is glad they walked in. Same schedule. Same software. Totally different energy.
Truth over comfort... fun feels like a break from the work. It's actually how the work starts.
So pause for a second. When a patient walks through your door on a regular Tuesday, what does the first 10 seconds feel like? Would they call it warm... or would they call it efficient?
Today's focus: the 10 Second Question (do this TODAY)
This isn't a new system. It's one silly question and a smile.
- In a costume? Have SUPER fun with it. Not in one? Bring the same energy anyway. A headband, a spooky playlist, or just a bigger smile.
- Ask every patient a 10 SECOND question when they walk in. "Candy corn... yes or no?" Or "What would you be for Halloween if you could be anything?" Or "Best candy in the bowl today?"
- Whatever they say, VIBE with it. Play along. Match their energy. "Candy corn? Okay, I SEE you. Let's go."
That's it. Three steps. No script to memorize, no props to buy.
Do you feel the difference between "How are you today?" and "Candy corn... yes or no?" One gets a "fine, thanks." The other gets a laugh, a face, and a patient who is suddenly IN the conversation with you.
Don't celebrate Halloween where you are? Here's your focus.
I want this to work for EVERY office, so let's talk about it.
Maybe Halloween isn't big in your town. Maybe your patients don't celebrate it. Maybe your community just doesn't do it, and that is completely fine. This focus was never about the holiday.
It's about the lightness.
So swap the question. Keep the same 10 seconds, the same smile, the same "okay, I SEE you" energy. Here are a few that work any day of the year:
- "Pineapple on pizza... yes or no?"
- "Coffee or tea this morning?"
- "What's the best thing you've eaten this week?"
The question is never the point. The laugh + curiosity is the point.
(And a quick note, with love. Keep it playful and light, and keep it about the patient's FUN, not their personal details or their health. If a patient isn't in a joking mood, match THEIR energy and let it go. Reading the room is part of the skill.)
The best front desk I ever walked into (a quick tangent)
Okay, quick tangent. Think about the last place you walked into where somebody was genuinely glad you showed up. A restaurant. A little shop. A coffee place where the person behind the counter grins and says "there she is!"
Did it matter what they sold? Not really. You went back because of how it FELT.
Now flip it. Your patients walk into a place that, for a lot of them, is already a little vulnerable. They might be in pain. They might be nervous. They might be wondering if this is even going to work.
And the first thing they get to feel is either a checklist... or a smile with a silly question attached.
That's what the tangent is really about. Your front desk can be the place patients look forward to. Not because of the decorations. Because of the person behind the desk.
Why one silly question is a retention move
Some people hear this and think it's cute. A nice extra if you have time.
It's not an extra. It's where the relationship starts.
When a patient laughs with you, the next conversation gets easier. And the conversations that come later are the BIG ones... the plan of care, the schedule, the "can you refer someone" ask, the review. All of those get easier with a patient who already feels comfortable with you.
Retention. Referrals. Reviews.
That's connection with a direction. The smile is where it starts, and the direction is where it goes. Connection is the conversion.
It's the same idea we talked about in Friday Focus #75, where we wrote ONE detail in the notes. Last week was about remembering the person. This week is about enjoying the person. Together, that is a patient who feels like a regular, not a number.
For my D.C.s reading this
With love, Doc... this one looks silly. That's on purpose.
If you're the D.C. whose team is professional and efficient but a little stiff, this is one of the lowest effort places to start loosening it up. You don't need a culture overhaul. You need your team to feel allowed to have fun with patients.
And if you're the D.C. with a rock star team that is already full of personality... keep going. Ask yourself one question: is that fun happening on purpose, or only when YOU are in the room?
So here's the task you hand your C.A. today:
"Pick your ONE silly question for the day. Ask every patient who walks in. At the end of the day, tell me the funniest answer you got."
Then at your next huddle, ask out loud: "Who got the best answer this week, and what did that patient say?"
One gentle frame, with love... handing this to your team is delegating. Handing it over and never asking about it again is abdicating. Give them the permission. Keep the question for yourself.
For my C.A.s reading this š¤
This is your permission slip to LEAD, not just work.
You don't need anyone's approval to ask a patient about candy corn. You don't need a costume. You don't need to be the loudest person in the building.
You just need to be willing to go first. Say the silly thing. Smile. Match their energy.
And when a patient says "okay, you're weird"... take that as the highest compliment. You just became the part of their day they'll remember.
So what is YOUR silly question today?
Costume only teams vs. connected teams
ā Costume only teams wait for a holiday to be fun.
ā
Connected chiropractic teams bring the lightness every day... and let it build the relationship.
So which one is your office right now? Are you the team that is fun once a year... or the team that is fun on a random Wednesday?
Frequently asked questions
What are some fun Halloween ideas for a chiropractic office?
Wear a costume, or bring a headband, a spooky playlist, or a bigger smile. Then ask every patient one quick 10 second question when they walk in, like "Candy corn... yes or no?" or "What would you be for Halloween if you could be anything?" Play along with their answer. The goal is a laugh, not a production.
What if my chiropractic office doesn't celebrate Halloween?
You can still do the same focus. Swap the Halloween question for an everyday one, like "Pineapple on pizza... yes or no?" The lightness is the point, not the holiday. Keep the same 10 seconds, the same smile, and the same playful energy.
How can a front desk team make patients laugh without being unprofessional?
Keep the question playful and about fun, not personal details or health. Ask it in about 10 seconds, match the patient's energy, and let it go if they aren't in the mood. Friendly and professional can live in the same moment.
Does making the front desk fun help patient retention?
It can. When a patient laughs with your team, they tend to feel more comfortable, and the next conversation gets easier. That comfort supports the conversations that lead to retention, referrals, and reviews. The smile is where the relationship starts.
Who should lead this in a chiropractic office, the D.C. or the C.A.?
The C.A. leads the question, since they're usually the first person a patient sees. The D.C. gives the permission and asks about it at the huddle. That's delegating, not abdicating.
Your one move before you close the tab
You don't need the full costume.
You need ONE silly question and a smile.
Pick your question right now. Ask the next patient who walks in. That's today's assignment.
The smile is where the relationship starts.
